Nijssen Electric is proud to be a Preferred Provider of charging station installations for Tesla automobiles. But we’ve also installed dozens of charging stations for many other models, including Fiat 500e, Nissan Leaf, and others. We recommend installing the most popular charging stations: Bosch and Leviton. They have a charging time from 4-8 hours, depending on the capacity from your charger and electrical installation. Please read below for insights into your car’s needs.
Tesla Model S Sedan
The Tesla Model S is considered by many to be the ultimate electric car, a triumph of engineering and style! It’s available in 60 kWh and 85 kWh battery options giving the car a range of 200 and 260 miles. There are two type of charging outlets:
• NEMA 14-30 240 volt, 24 amp
• NEMA 14-50 240 volt, 40 amp or the HPWC 240 volt (High Power Wall Charger). The HPWC can do a full charge in 3.5 hours if the capacity is there.
Tesla owners with a fast charge option can use the Super Charging stations next to the freeway that does a full recharge in 30-40 minutes.
The Tesla Roadster was the first highway-capable all-electric sports car of its kind, which can travel 244 miles on a single charge. A full recharge of the battery system requires 3.5 hours using the High Power Connector that supplies 240 volt, 70 amp electricity. The Roadster uses a proprietary charging connector, although Tesla sells a mobile adapter that enables recharging with an industry standard SAE J1772 Coupler. It is used for both Level 1 and Level 2 charging. The battery can be recharged using:
• A wall-mounted 208–240 volt, 70 amp maximum current Home Connector. This is an OEM version of the TS-70 charging station from ClipperCreek.
• A portable 120–240 volt, 40 amp maximum current Universal Mobile Connector cable that can plug into a NEMA 14–50 receptacle and other 240 volt receptacles using adapters.
• A portable 120 volt, 15 amp maximum current Spare Mobile Connector cable that plugs into a standard electrical outlet.
The LEAF is the most popular EV car in its price range and has a range of about 116 miles on a charge, with the equivalent of 126 miles per gallon. Powered by an advanced Lithium-ion battery the LEAF can be recharged using:
• A 220–240 volt wall-mounted charging station which takes approximately 4-7 hours to reach full charge.
• A EVSE or Trickle charge cable for “opportunity” charging using a 110–120 volt, 15 amp dedicated electrical receptacle. Full charge is reached in approximately 21 hours.
• A Quick charge (CaDeMo) for public charging stations. Full charge is reached in approximately 30 minutes where fast charging stations are available.
Road & Track rated the Fiat 500e the “Best Electric Car of 2013” for its snappy performance and styling. Its range is nearly the same as the Nissan LEAF but with its shorter length you can park almost everywhere. The 24 kWh Lithium-ion battery can be recharged using:
• A Level 1, 120 volt NEMA 5-15 EVSE cable (standard) that plugs into a dedicated electrical receptacle, Full recharge is reached in approximately 23 hours.
• A Level 2, 240 volt, 40 amp wall-mounted charging station (preferred). Full recharge is reached in approximately 4 hours.
An industry standard SAE J1772 Coupler is used for both Level 1 and Level 2 charging. The Quick charge option (CaDeMo) is not available for the Fiat 500e.
Toyota RAV4 EV
The RAV4 EV is the only all-electric SUV available and has a range of 103 miles. The RAV4 EV has a comfortable, roomy interior and also has agile handling and all-weather capability. The RAV4 EV has a Lithium-ion battery with two drive, and charging, modes: Normal and Extended. The battery can be recharged using:
• A Level 2, 240 volt 40 amp, 9,6 kW or 30 amp, 7.2 kW EVSE home charging station. Recharging times vary from 5.5 to 52 hours depending on Normal or Extended charge modes.
An industry standard SAE J1772 Coupler is used for the Level 2 charging. The Quick charge option (CaDeMo) is not available for the RAV4 EV.
Toyota Prius Plug-in
Kelley Blue Book named the Prius Plug-in the 2013 “A 10 Best Green Car”. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid has two models: the Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid Advanced. In hybrid mode, Prius Plug-in earns a remarkable EPA-estimated combined mileage rating of 50 mpg. To maximize your fuel economy, switch to EV Mode, and Prius Plug-in offers you an EPA-estimated 95 mpge. Should you run out of electric charge, Prius Plug-in will seamlessly shift back into hybrid mode. The Lithium-ion battery can be recharged using:
• A Level 1, 120 volt, NEMA 5-15 EVSE receptacle cable (standard) that plugs into a dedicated electrical receptacle. Recharging time is approximately 3 hours.
• A Level 2, 240 volt, 16 amp, 3.8 kW EVSE home charging station. Recharging time is approximately 1.5 hours.
An industry standard SAE J1772 Coupler is used for the Level 2 charging.
Smart ForTwo Electric Drive
The Smart Fourtwo Electric is one of the smallest cars on the market, but a dream for parking and city living. A Lithium-ion battery powers the diminutive two-seater Smart Electric and has an EPA-estimated rating of 107 combined mpge. Smart has a range of 76 miles city, 59 highway and 68 combined. There are two types of charging options:
• A 220–240 volt wall-mounted charging station which takes approximately 3.5 to 6 hours to reach full charge.
• A portable 120 volt cable that plugs into a standard dedicated electrical receptacle. Full recharge takes approximately 16 hours.
Ford Focus Electric
The Focus Electric is a five-door hatchback that provides about 80 miles of range. It employs a 107-kilowatt (143 horsepower) motor, compared to the LEAF’s 110 horsepower motor. Powered exclusively by a Lithium-ion battery, the 2014 Ford Focus Electric has an EPA-estimated rating of 105 combined mpge. The Focus Electric uses a 6.6-kilowatt on board charger capable of adding about 20 to 25 miles of driving range in an hour, when pulling 240 volts. There are two types of charging options:
• A 220–240 volt wall-mounted charging station which takes approximately 4 hours to reach full charge.
• A portable 120 volt cable that plugs into a standard dedicated electrical receptacle. Full recharge takes approximately 20 hours.
The Focus EV does not offer a Quick charge (CaDeMo) for public charging stations.
Honda Fit EV
Honda has a history of environmental leadership dating back to a time when green was simply a color, so it’s no surprise that the fun-to-drive Fit EV has been named one of the “Greenest Vehicles of 2013” by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The Fit EV is available for lease only on a limited basis. Check your local authorized Honda dealer for availability. The Fit has a 118 mpge combined rating making it one of the most efficient cars on the road. There are two types of charging options:
• The 240 volt Leviton Home Charging System hardware is included with the lease, however, the home charging system installation and material costs are not included. Full recharge of the Lithium-ion battery takes approximately 3 hours.
• A portable 120 volt cable that plugs into a standard dedicated electrical recepticle. Full recharge takes approximately 15 hours.

While every EV charging station installation has its own specific needs, there are some basic considerations to proactively help with the installation process.
When purchasing an electric car, it’s very important to know what electrical load capacity is available for your charging station. Prior to the charging station installation, we need to calculate the current available capacity of your dwelling. Then, we will assess the most optimal wiring solution, as well as alternative options. We’ll inform you if any electrical upgrades to your dwelling are required, and we have the expertise to do the work properly and up to code. Please keep in mind that your utility company may have extra costs to upgrade their wiring at the point of entrance.
To help promote the adoption of electric cars, California has mandated electrical utilities to provide qualified reductions to your electric rate. PG&E and other utility companies have reduced residential rate options for EV charging stations, which will help to offset your increased electricity use and lower your bill. We encourage you to take advantage of these discounts!
Outdated Electrical Equipment
Electricians are not allowed to work on older, unsafe panels like Federal Pacific (FPE). This means we are required to replace the hazardous panel and other out-of-code wiring, even if your load capacity is enough. Some building departments also require replacing Zynsco and Sylvania panels. We encourage you to check with your local building department on the specifics of your situation, before starting the charging station installation process.
Single Family Dwelling
In your home, generally there is garage or driveway parking. For these situations, installing an EV charging station depends on the condition and age of your home’s electrical installation, structural considerations, and the electrical load capacity required for the desired level of charging power. Your own situation will be dependent on these variables. But rest assured, we understand and respect the very personal nature of working within the place where you live. We are deeply committed to offering friendly and reliable service, with the highest level of professionalism.
In apartments, condos and townhouses, parking your car is done in several ways: assigned parking, common area parking, and deed parking. For these parking situations, the main cost of installing an EV charging station depends on two primary factors: adequate building wiring (the distance between electrical service access point and the desired charging station site), and electrical load capacity with related transformer or service capacity. We can schedule the installation only after the HOA or building management agrees with the work evaluation. Be advised that an additional insurance requirement may be asked from you by the HOA or management company.
County/City Building Department
We are often asked why an electrical permit is required for the job. The simple answer is: for your safety. We can sympathize that this adds extra steps to the installation process, but it’s the proper procedure. Ultimately, the building department exists to help and protect the consumer.
